[the tqr badass rattles his keys, a chain of Marley'esque proportion, thankfully the similarities do not run so deep as to include the damned ghost's weeping and wailing.

Finding the skeleton, Guevara turns the lock and opens the heavy dungeon door, brushes the cobwebs hanging before him out of the way as he walks down the subterranean vault, little used and less known. Counting the wooden beams in the ceiling, he stops at the 13th, reaches up and activates the reticulating ladder, that unfolds just so a foot or so from his feet. He climbs up and, at the roof, he loosens a steel wheel then pops open the square hatch and climbs out onto the Floor, the glass tiled disco dance floor to be exact.

As he suspected, the crew is drunk as a tribe of skunks after a night of eating fermented berries: Jesus is baked and buried, his dirty sandaled feet the only parts of him visible sticking out the cleaning closet door; Carol is passed out just shy of the dance floor, one hand grabbing at the tiles as if so close but so far from the gone good times then; Dep, doused in absinthe or is it cum, Guevara squints and decides that it must be absinthe although not with any degree of certitude that would be accepted as evidence in a court of law, spread eagle on her desk, the levitating pyramid of cat's eyes wobbily rotating with unsure tao of making; and Bolidard himself, the disaster master and iron lunged busker, his face consumed in a whirlwind o cap that made his hair straight Einstein foshizzle, thought his eyes be far away and the light in them barely visible unless you searched deeply inward]

Hola fellow TQRians! How do you say, el flooro is dank and larp and deep, but you have capital to (beep!) and trials to come over before you ah-sleep.

The word of el jefe. Thanks be to el gordo. Adios!

[his responsibilities acquitted, he turns and backs down the ladder, closing the glass title hatch after him with subdued whoosh-bang.]

[doomey staggers over to the glass tile that'd just recently been used as a trapdoor. he has a lit pall mall viced in his teeth, and he puffs on it, gazing down at the portal. he bends his knees, feels about with his fingertips, looking for a means of egress]

we've a sublevel?

[he pokes and examines the tile, and then he stands, giving up]

fuck me. we'll never get out of here alive.

[Carol's at the cherrywood, seated in the pilot's chair, the current capital spread out on the desktop, and she's watching Boligard on the tiles, one eyebrow raised]

Rabbit hole, cousin?

[She gathers up the capital, taps it straight on the desktop]

Anywhat, Barney came through, he crafted a solid piece. I'm shoving it Terminalward.

[She holds the capital above her head, closes her eyes, and she focuses her energy handward. The capital shinks and shinks and is gone. She lowers her hands to the desktop]

Damn, I could really go for a Captain's Basket right now.

[She looks around the Floor for a steaming basket of fried fish and prawns and oysters and popcorn shrimp]

[Jesus leans over the front edge of the cherrywood's desktop, the current capital spread out before him, his kimono slipped off his right shoulder, the obi totally untied, both ends hanging limp at each thread-thin hip loop, his back to us, the tiger on display. Java smoke curls over his left shoulder as he puffs on his cigar. Jesus plucks the cigar from his teeth and plants both palms on the desktop, gazing down on the capital]

You know what, parentheses don't belong in dialogue. They just don't feel right.

[Jesus turns and puffs on his Java. Thank god he's wearing swim trunks! He sets his asscheeks against the edge of the cherrywood]

Could be argued that Dickens used parentheses in dialogue, but we have -

[doomey steps toward the cherrytop, passing by DeP's desk and giving her snappy side-five]

fuck Dickens!

[he sidles up beside the Jesus and gazes down at the capital spread out on the cherrywood's desktop]

[Jesus gathers the kimono around him and loosely knots the obi, and then he sucks some sweet smoke out of the Java. He crosses his arms]

Little things like these parentheses get under my skin and itch like the plague. It's not my fault. God made me as I am. I vote this capital go through the Porthole.

[He raises his combat glasses, nestles them up on his hairline, and then he recrosses his arms, his teeth vised on the Java, his cheeks filling and emptying, puff, puff, puff]

I'm pretty set on this, peeps.

okay, well, yeah.

[doomey taps out a pall mall and swan vestas it, sucks in some smoke]

those parentheses are a bummer. they do get on my nerves too. but the VC crafts about chess, and he mentions openings by name, and well, you know i'm a sucker for anything that has to do with chess.

[doomey leans in, examines the capital]

i mean, it's not illegal to use parentheses in dialogue, not like raping small children in a bouncy house at a birthday party. i mean, it's not -

[Carol thrusts her palm within an inch of Boligard's glowing cigarette tip. She had to lean forward in the pilot's chair to accomplish this task, but now she holds her hand before Boligard and stabs at his eyes with hers]

Stop. You always wander down questionable verbal alleys, cousin. Just examine the capital before you...

[She rescinds her palm, and she leans back in the pilot's chair]

I'll examine it. And then we'll vote. The three of us.

We're aware.

[Carol leans forward and examines the capital upside down. She can do that. She has tremendous skills]

[doomey stands erect, a fresh pall mall clamped between his teeth, smoke tooting out into the Floor's airspace]

well, okay.

[he places his fists on his hips and he puffs on his cigarette]

martin keeps using those damn parentheses in his dialogue, but he keeps using chess as a dramatic prop. and the stuff his two characters discuss is deep, cousin.

[doomey steps out onto the tiles]

i have to forgive the man his parentheses and vote for Terminalization.

[he sucks on the pall mall, gazing at Carol who remains bent over the current capital, examining]

Seriously?

[Jesus shoves the butt end of his Java into the mess inside the massive triangular marble ashtray situated toward the front left edge of the cherrywood's desktop. He smashes the remains of the cigar into the dead ash, and he twists it, sparks jumping ship, drowned-ship smoke edging DePward]

You're encouraging this sort of hedonistic reformation of an established art form?

[Jesus steps out onto the tiles]

Wait. That sounds regal. I do want change, but I want to feel comfortable with it. Can't deal with warts and acne. If it doesn't feel good, rip it from your body, right?

[Jesus smiles, laughs. He looks over at Carol who's bent over the current capital]

[Carol steps back from the cherrywood, she whips her head left to right, cracking neck bones, and she snarls her lips]

Okay. Godamn, the dialogue snafu is heavy, and it does effect the capital. Can't examine the prose without thinking Why is heshe putting parenthesis in the dialogue. Maybe in different countries the dialogue option is more open. Is this VC from here abouts? Hmmm. Could be that's what up, right, cousin? But as is, can't let it go Terminal. Awkward is the word. This capital is awkward. We all need to be on the same page, Samantha. So...

[Carol grabs up the capital and stomps over to the Porthole. She tosses the capital out the window]

Martin Pedersen's Over Boards has been Portholed.

well okay damn but...

[doomey shakes his head]

okay. adam breckenridge sent us a capital named The Worst Game of Baseball Ever Played

[doomey slaps the capital down on the desktop]

i examined it in the john earlier. it's really fucking funny. i figure it's goodstuff, family. we'll be model-rocketing this bitch upstairs.

[doomey leans down to the tiles, and he crafts one of those rockets we made back when, balsa wood and glue and firecrackers and spit and giddy bursts of laughter. he strikes a swan vesta and lights the fuse, and the model rocket bursts Terminalward]

[Jesus, on the tiles, leafs through his current capital]

I've got Nicholas Stillman's Silken Slippers, guys. I've examined it a few times, once hurriedly and another examination nice and slow, and I've found it "not what we're looking for", that go-to for most or every lit magazine out there as far as rejection notices go. But I've little defense against a battering, because we here at TQR are actually looking for anything good. Anything slightly good, right. So...

[Jesus gathers up the capital and crumples it up, balls it up]

Stillman's capital is going out the window.

[Jesus shoots, and he scores! The balled up capital touches the rim of the Porthole but it goes through, and it sails into the storm outside, unfurling and becoming dust]
