Okay.

[She's nested in the pilot's chair, and she can't help but giggle]

You goddamn fuckers.

[Like a professional dealer in Vegas she deals out a fresh capital across the desktop of the cherrywood. She looks over what she dealt, and she laughs. This might be a good sign. Might be a bad sign]

[doomey crawls over to the cherrywood. he rises up behind Carol, gives her a long kiss on her temple, and then he examines the capital she's laid out before her on the desktop]

so we've got Bob Stephenson's Phases of Dreaming. everybody just calm the fuck down.

[Jesus goes down on the tiles, cross legged, arms out, thumb tips to index finger tips]

I'm calm, cousin.

[doomey pulls a capital from inside his suit coat. he opens it (it'd been folded triplet), and he looks it over. he slaps his forehead and smiles at the camera that no one else can see)

my dumb fucking ass, I forgot about Shirey's Curveball. i went earlier to the bathroom, which makes no sense seeing as how there is not a bath in that room, and i sat on the toilet and let loose some waste and examined some capital, my nostrils all aflutter due to the rankness of my droppings (how do we live with ourselves?), and then I had to clean my hind quarters, and so I did so, I think, memories flit and flap and land frail grounded, cousin, like dew-laden blades in a field, tired and not willing to rise no matter the grand occasion. and so I returned to the Floor with only half the current capital, the other half flushed. and so, after much wiping and examining, we've decided to toss Curveball out the Porthole.

[doomey balls up the remaining pages of capital]

though most of the pages, shit-smeared, have gone up into the plumbing. and that might be my bad. that seems dirty, and we should not treat our VC that way, but, hey, shit happens.

[he tosses the remaining ball of capital up to the mirrorball. doomey returns to the cherrywood and grabs up the remote. he thumbs in Kinski's Hot Stenographer, and he gives Stephenson's capital a look see. he taps out a pall mall]

man, I tell you, if they'd told me this job was this hard back in the day? I would have laughed in their face. but we are one of the last pillars of this downgrading society. man, anywhat, jeez. being real in a world of muck is difficult, susan.

[he leans in and takes a look at the current capital]

[Carol glares at Doomey as he shifted her pilot's chair a bit to the left when he rushed the cherrywood]

You can step off a bit, cousin. A girl needs room. I'm sitting here!

[She continues examining the current capital. She bites her thumb nail and shifts her ass in the pilot's chair. She finishes and leans back, flapping her eyelids]

Okay, this capital by Bob Stephenson is one of those sci-fi blurbs about sci-fi. It has science in it, and it has a gentle plot, and it has characters that resemble many of my family relations at reunions in Utah campgrounds during my godawful teens when the girls seemed truly evil while the boys seemed smelly and stupid.

[Carol grabs the capital and twists it, showing her teeth and flexing her homeless camp muscles, and she shakes her head, and then she calms herself]

Please, for the love of Christ, do not send us this stuff. We can't use it. We need really good stuff, Helen. We're looking for majestic ramblings, fool. And so we are sorry to report that we are tossing Phases of Dreaming out the Porthole.

[Carol closes her eyes, and she winds the capital in her hands, forming a ball, and then she tosses it toward the Porthole, and it goes through, and it it floats out there in the deluge, up and down and cold, motherfucking cold]

Ah. I hate letting VCs down.

[Jesus, seated on the colored glass tiles, has found a wooden chessboard somewhere, and he's placed it before him. He upends a velvet blue bag and chess pieces tumble onto the board]

Carol, I think you handled it well. I've been in that seat, let me tell you. It ain't easy letting VCs down. Tears me apart sometimes. If we didn't need Goodstuff, we could accept any form of prose, right? Like those other lit zines. Craft a capital, they say, and we will put that nasty stuff in our magazine. No, we need to push it back when it's not good enough. You did good, girl.

[Jesus thumps his chest with his fist. With other hand he sets the chess pieces on their appropriate squares]

[doomey throws down some current cap on the desktop. he spreads it out, looks it over, taps his lower lip with his index finger tip. he leans in]

cousins, kat devitt's Our Dance seems really cognoscente on the outside, but on the inside it seems to melt a bit, seems to fold and sink. we need better stuff, Goodstuff! Christ! not saying we need Russian lit but, god Christ, we need something to cross our path. stop sending TQR complete god awfulness. it'll wilt our walls, cousin. it'll sink our fucking floor. just stop it, you fucking bastards!

[Carol pushes against Doomey's hip as he's crowded her. The pilot's chair has wheels, so it's not good at keeping her front and center. She looks down on Kat's capital spread out on the cherrytop's desktop]

Yeah. I concur. Nothing of value here.

[Jesus finishes setting up the chess board. He sits cross-legged on the glass tiles, and he hovers over the board. He sits on the side of White, and he focuses on his army, rosewood Staunton]

I'm going with you guys on this one. The hard truth of literary business, who gets in and goes on and who gets the shaft and ignored, it's all about what's going this particular day. Today I am challenging Rorschalk to a chess game, so I really couldn't care less which capital rises and which shoots out the Porthole.

[Jesus focuses. He reaches out and moves his King pawn to E4. He settles back, twists his lips]

Rorschalk? Got game?

[doomey sweeps up the current capital in his arms and twirls. he bumps into Carol's chair, and she jumps to her feet and shoves doomey against the Floor's wall, bringing her hand to a hilt at her belt. doomey rolls with it, wrapping the current capital into an oblong ballish sort of thang, and he moves along the wall, sidestepping, afraid of Carol (rightly), and he shoves the capital out the Porthole. he watches the capital float off into the storm. he swallows. he turns back to the room, looks around. he absorbs the fact that a chess game has started]

are you fucking me. you're playing a game?

[DeP's looking about at the mention a chess challenge. Not that she's any good at playing. She likes to watch, though. Games are all about observation. And winners and not winners of course. Losers don't exist in DeP's world.]

It's not great, is it? Anything I mean. When was the last time you wanted to use that word 'great'? Oui, it has been eliminated from my vocabulary.

But game. Game is chance. Jesus, what are you exploring here with this chess match?

I looked high and low in between sips of my drambui these lines of Dean Grondo's Neighbours. Pages and pages of mundane albeit believable human scene. Dialogue between...yes, neighbours. They're working together to try resolving a problem. On and on they go, tolerating each others' differences. Hey! Maybe it's the new Mundane Utopia.

Non, the VC's smooth, but Neighbours can't stay to play. Porthole opening, s'il vous plait. It's a hungry venture capital day.

What's your move, Jesus? May I take a photograph of you sitting there that way, waiting?

Someone say chess? Great game (though not as good as Go). You should challenge AlphaZero, Jesus. AZ taught itself chess from scratch (given the rules only) in four hours, and became world champion, surpassed centuries of human study. But you could probably pull a miracle out of your ass.

PS
You had me at e4. No other pawn can move there.

[Jesus looks into the boss's eyes. The boss is sitting cross-legged across from him on the glass tiles. Rorschalk's eyes are bloodshot, bumpy with veins that pulse. Jesus looks away, sickened]

Okay, boss. Wow, I don't believe I've seen you so close up.

[Jesus lowers his head, wipes his nose with his wrist, and he focuses on the chessboard. He moves his knight. G1 - F3]

Take all the pictures you want, Ms. DePlancher. I'll be your wallpaper.

[Jesus swivels his skull, squeezes his knees with his white-knuckled fingers]

That's what Val should have said, right?
