I give big props to cap that take chances. BRIEF LIVES is one of those. Doesn't try and explain its conceit or its hook, even though it is fantastic. Just goes with it as if it's as plain as day. And mostly, I could believe it.
Loved some of the imagery, especially the morphing bodies in the liquid heroin on the spoon, popping in and out of existence in the span of a rolling boil and then back again into the primordial goo. Or something like that. The two ghostly children at the entrance of the cathedral that reminded me so much of an old version of Scrooge wherein is WANT and IGNORANCE personified by two decrepit children. I loved that whole phantasm of a scene.
What I couldn't let go though was the warlock scene. It just didn't make any sense at all to me. There is mention of this old homeless bum being somehow a go between of parallel universes, but little else to flesh out the claim. And the hand job/blow job is for what? Later it comes out in dialogue that the guy's jizz was some kind of super-charged heroin? Is that what I am to infer? Hmmff. I do not know. I just couldn't get past that. So I had to let it go.
